In 1984, we built our own processing facility and produced both shell oysters and shucked oyster meat, along with fresh picked crabmeat and whole crabs. In 1995, we opened our second processing plant located on the Chesapeake Bay in Gwynns Island, Virginia. This facility contains our crab-picking operation, consisting of 40 to 50 personnel dedicated to hand-picking crabmeat. Our facility also includes an outdoor soft shell facility that contains 120 pass-through tanks. In 2000, we expanded our original 1984 facility equipped with our in-house pasteurization facility. This expansion has given us the ability to produce value added products such as crab cakes, deviled crabs, and other assorted foods.
J & W Seafood continues to process seafood from the Chesapeake Bay. In 2008, we began carrying a line of imported crabmeat for our customers that are seeking an alternative to our domestic product.
